Plot Summary

On the beach, with towering waves, the heroic knight Brock (Max von Sydow) plays a life and death game against the black clothed Grim Reaper (Bengt Ekerot). During the process of playing chess, the knight reflected on his life, seeing and hearing scenes that were in line with the Bible. In the late period of the Crusades in the 14th century, epidemics spread throughout the European continent, causing great hardship for the people. Brock once met a couple in a circus, where the husband was devout in the gods and extremely devout, while the wife was more practical and obedient. Their mutual support makes happiness easily accessible. The knight met a blacksmith couple in the forest. The blacksmith was very rude, and his wife was very coquettish.
