Plot Summary
Introduction to Chinese: In the 19th century, the Industrial Revolution spread to the United States, and the American economy developed rapidly. At the same time, the United States gained large territories in the West and urgently needed labor. Southern slavery became an obstacle to economic development. In 1860, Lincoln, who advocated the abolition of slavery, was elected president. Southern slave owners rebelled, and the slave states in the South became independent. In February 1861, the Confederate government was formed, and Davis was elected president. In April of the same year, the Southern Confederate Army launched a preemptive attack and captured the Samte Fortress, leading to the outbreak of civil war. The Southern Army was well prepared and quickly occupied the naval base of Norfolk. On May 6th, they captured the railway hub of Manassas and advanced towards Washington. The Northern Army hastily fought and entered Virginia on the 24th. On July 21st, the Union Army was defeated and fled back to Washington. Lincoln urgently mobilized 500000 volunteers. In 1862, the Northern Army launched an attack, with Grant commanding the Western Front and making smooth progress. In February, they captured Fort Henry and Fort Donaldson, defeated the Southern Army in the Battle of Charlotte in April, and captured Collins and Memphis in May, liberating Kentucky and Tennessee. The Northern Army on the Eastern Front made slow progress and was defeated by Robert in July The Southern Army commanded by Li was defeated, and Li continued to advance northward. In August, he defeated the Northern Army again at the Bull River and faced Washington. In September, the two armies engaged in the Battle of Antietam, and Li was repelled. In December, the Northern Army was once again defeated by Lee in the Battle of Fredericksburg. On New Year's Day 1863, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring the liberation of black slaves and allowing them to join the Northern Army. Later, he also enacted the Homestead Act, allowing all Americans to obtain land in the West. In May of the same year, the Union army launched another attack on Richmond and was repelled by Lee at Chesrowville. In June, Li advanced northward again, and on July 1st, the two armies engaged in a decisive battle at Gettysburg. On July 3rd, the Southern army was defeated. While Li Beijin was advancing, Grant surrounded the Confederate fortress of Vicksburg on the western front, which was defending the Mississippi River. On May 22, the Union launched a total attack and engaged in 47 days of shelling. On July 4, the Union surrendered. On July 8th, the Northern army occupied Hudson Harbor and the Southern army was divided into two parts, east and west. In September, the Northern Army captured Chattanooga, and in November, they repelled the Southern Army's counterattack. In 1864, the North launched a comprehensive attack, and from May to June, Grant led his army to a series of battles with Li. Although Li was able to win every time, the reinforcements from the North army continued to arrive, and Li's army was in despair. On June 15th, the Northern army attacked Petersburg, but the two sides were deadlocked and held back the main force of the Southern army for nine months. In July, a portion of the Confederate army launched another attack on Washington, but was repelled by the Northern army led by Sheridan. Sheridan implemented a scorched earth strategy during the advance, and the Confederate army disintegrated. Sherman launched an attack on the Western Front in May and captured Atlanta on September 2nd, destroying the city. Afterwards, Sherman advanced towards the coast of Georgia with a broad front, implementing a scorched earth strategy along the way that destroyed all available resources in the South. On December 21st, Sherman captured Savannah and cut the eastern part of the southern state into two halves, north and south. In January 1865, Sherman headed north and successively captured Columbia and Charleston in February. In March, he joined forces with Grant, and on April 3, he captured Petersburg. On the 9th, Lee led the remaining troops to surrender. On April 14th, people from the South assassinated Lincoln. On the 26th, the South surrendered and the civil war ended. The Civil War destroyed slavery and cleared the way for the development of capitalist economy in the United States. The Industrial Revolution brought tremendous military progress in this war, with both sides using metal shell casings and rear loading rifles for combat, using railways and steamships for rapid troop mobilization and assembly, using steam armored warships for naval battles, and the first use of mechanical continuous firing guns in actual combat. Especially in the north, the production method of manufacturing standardized parts to assemble weapons was developed, greatly improving industrial production efficiency.
