Description

Plot Summary

Frederick I's strong interest in Italy made Italian affairs the most important part of his life. In order to conquer the cities of Lombardy and make these prosperous regions a source of tax for the empire, Frederick I implemented a long-term policy of invading Italy. He carried out five military invasions of Italy (1157, 1158, 1163, 1166, and 1174). In 1158, Frederick I issued the so-called Edict of Lungaria, which forcibly placed the cities of Lombardy under the jurisdiction of mayors appointed by the emperor. The most powerful of these cities, Milan, refused to obey orders, which led to the invasion of Frederick I in 1158. The Germanic cavalry almost completely destroyed Milan. The atrocities of the German knights united these cities, and they joined forces with the Pope to form the Lombard League in 1167, the historically renowned 'Corps of Death'. In 1176, the Lombard League completely defeated Frederick I, forcing him to cancel all decisions of the Edict of Lungaria in the Treaty of Constance of 1183. However, Frederick I's Italian policy also achieved certain results. By arranging for their son Henry to marry Constantia, the heir of the Kingdom of Sicily, the Hohenstaufen dynasty gained control over Sicily. However, it was the Sicilian territory that became the root of the brutal struggle between the Hohenstaufen dynasty and the Pope, which ultimately led to the extermination of the Hohenstaufen family.
