Plot Summary

British writer James Miller (played by William Shimell) came to Tuscany, Italy to give a lecture on his new work "Legitimate Copy". He discussed the viewpoint in the book with readers: it is unnecessary to argue about the authenticity of artistic creation, because the replica itself is the original work, and the original work is also copied from other works. A French woman (played by Juliette Binoche) who deals in antiques participates in a discussion with her 11 year old son and wants to ask for a signature for a newly purchased book. She left early halfway because her son was hungry and left a phone number before leaving. Miller and the woman met again at her antique shop, and they drove to the outskirts to see something. She drove Miller aimlessly in the car, discussing the themes of books, visiting museums, and talking about her rebellious son. The two argued endlessly along the way. At a coffee shop, the female owner thought Miller was a woman's husband and started discussing marriage with her around Miller. So they made the mistake and Miller began to play the role of a woman's husband. They went on a date and went to a hotel. But the copy is only a replica, not the original. Miller ended his identity as a replica and left the countryside alone. Binoche won the Best Actress award in the main competition section of the 63rd Cannes Film Festival for this film.
