Description

Plot Summary

In the Atacama Desert of Chile, astronomers explore the universe in search of the origin of life. Not far away, local women are searching for the remains of their loved ones in the sand dunes, who were arbitrarily disposed of and killed by the Pinochet dictatorship. Director Patrick Guzman juxtaposes these two searches for life, which is thought-provoking. This is a documentary filmed in the Atacama Desert at an altitude of 3000 meters. Astronomers gather there to observe the stars. This place also attracts many visitors for one reason: the surface drought can keep human corpses intact. In addition to the corpses of the mummies and lost explorers, there were also many political prisoners who died in this desert. The film emphasizes this duality, comparing astronomers' observations of stars searching for extraterrestrial life with those of fragmented families searching for loved ones. So the political aspect of the film is very clear. Behind the scenes director Patrick Guzman's every film is related to the memories of the Chilean nation in the 20th century: from his trilogy "The Battle of Chile" screened in the parallel competition section at the 1975 Cannes Film Festival, to "Salvador Allende" screened in the non competition section in 2004. The film 'Light of Hometown' also continues this theme, facing the future (stars) while not forgetting the price of winning independence and the painful past filled with blood.
