Plot Summary

On the eve of the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japan, director John Woo's latest war blockbuster, the Nationalist Army general Lei Yifang (played by Huang Xiaoming) achieved a major victory at a heavy cost. Survivors of this battle include communication soldier Tong Daqing (played by Tong Dawei) and Taiwanese Japanese military doctor Yan Zekun (played by Jin Chengwu). After the end of the War of Resistance Against Japan, Lei Yifang quickly fell in love and married his daughter Zhou Yunfen (played by Song Hye Kyo); Tong Daqing fell in love with the orphan girl Yu Zhen (played by Zhang Ziyi) who pretended to be a couple and took photos with him to meet his needs. Shortly after they met, they went their separate ways; Yan Zekun returned to Taiwan smoothly and traveled between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait on the "Taiping Wheel" to purchase medicinal herbs. However, the Japanese woman Yazi (played by Masami Nagasawa), who had a childhood sweetheart, could not forget her. The outbreak of the civil war forced Lei Yifang and Tong Daqing to return to the battlefield, and Zhou Yunfen and her family took the "Taiping Wheel" to Taiwan, where they began a long wait.
