Plot Summary

In the 1940s, as the civil war was coming to an end, Taiwanese doctor Yan Zekun (played by Takeshi Kaneshiro) frequently traveled between Taiwan and the mainland on the cruise ship "Taiping" in order to purchase medicine. In order to maintain the livelihood of his family, he appears calm on the surface, but deep down he has never stopped missing his lover Yazi (played by Masami Nagasawa) who was forced to separate due to war, while his younger brother Yan Zemin (played by Yang Youning) is determined to go to the mainland to carry out a revolution, causing the family to be in turmoil. Yan Zekun meets the wife of General Lei Yifang (played by Huang Xiaoming) (played by Song Hye Kyo) whom he has had a chance encounter with. General Lei's communication soldier Tong Daqing (played by Tong Dawei) cannot forget the lower class woman Yu Zhen (played by Zhang Ziyi), as well as the non commissioned officer (played by Wang Qianyuan) and his wife (played by Yu Feihong). They meet on the last "Taiping Wheel" heading to Taiwan and write about the joys and sorrows of the war era. The gears of fate are opened, and where should the ordinary people in this era go?
