Plot Summary

The film is adapted from the play of the same name by Samuel D. Hunter, which tells the story of Charlie (played by Brandon Fisher), a 272 kilogram English teacher who lives in seclusion in a run down apartment in rural Idaho, stubbornly and resolutely trying to eat himself to death. Charlie abandoned his family for his same-sex lover in middle age, but after his lover passed away, he indulged in overeating due to sadness and guilt, and attempted to repair his relationship with his 17-year-old daughter Ellie (played by Sadie Sink). As Charlie approaches his inevitable fate, his friend Liz (played by Zhou Hong), a cynical atheist nurse, and Elder Thomas (played by Ty Simpson), a young missionary, all try to find the will to be saved in Charlie, both physically and mentally. However, only Charlie's estranged daughter Ellie can show him a future beyond the current state of despair. Despite Ellie's sarcastic, hateful, and prickly nature, Charlie can find a last chance for redemption in her, perhaps even a glimmer of hope.
