Description

Plot Summary

In Prague in 1988, cellist Luka (Zdenek Sver á k) lost his job with the band for a long time and could only make a living by accompanying funeral homes and repairing tombstones. This older bachelor is quite charming in front of women and enjoys it endlessly, but the difficult life forces him to go against his original intention and fake marry a Soviet woman in order to obtain compensation. A few days after marriage, a Soviet woman turned to West Germany and left her five-year-old son Kolya (played by Andrei Chalimon) to be raised by Luca. Luca complained to Kolya about the Soviet hegemony in Czech, which the other party couldn't understand, and also had to deal with police investigations into fake marriages and a mother who was hostile towards the Soviet people. Luca entrusted multiple girlfriends to take care of Coria, and the father and son gradually developed a dependence on each other. Soon, the Soviet government was going to take back their child, and Luca took advantage of the chaotic situation in the late 1980s to run away from home with Coria... This film won more than ten awards, including the Best Foreign Language Film at the 1997 Academy Awards and the Honorary Award at the 1996 Venice Film Festival.
