Plot Summary

This is director Akira Kurosawa's first film after World War II. During the war, there was a huge uproar over the Ryukawa Incident, a professor at Kyoto University, and the prevalence of warlordism by Hatoyama's Minister of Culture. He dismissed Ryukawa, a professor at Kyoto Imperial University who advocated liberalism, but was unanimously opposed by the entire university at the time. In addition, using the Zorug International Disc Incident as a background, the story depicts the various experiences of the female protagonist Yuki during the war, and then criticizes the war and the prevailing fascism at that time. The later part of the film depicts the hardships experienced by Yukihiro, who decided to become independent. After following Nogami, she tasted the happiness of love for the first time, but the good times did not last long. Nogami was imprisoned for life due to her secret involvement in anti war movements, and Yukihiro was subjected to daily questioning and humiliation by secret agents. And the prosecutor in charge of this case turned out to be his former classmate, Shikawa. After being released, Yuki returned to the hometown deeply loved by Yemao and spent the day with his parents. After Japan's defeat, democracy prevailed, and Professor Yagamihara returned to school. Meanwhile, Yukihiro decided to engage in rural cultural movements. The Yukiyoshi in the film is not a traditional Japanese woman from the past, but a new era woman who has finally found herself and remained true to her will after the war and the chaotic period after the war.
