Description

Plot Summary

The declining scholar Gu Xingzhai (played by Shi Jun) runs a calligraphy and painting shop in a small town, "writing Spring Festival couplets on behalf of others" to make a living, taking care of his elderly mother. By chance, he meets Yang Zhiyun (played by Xu Feng), who has recently moved to the abandoned village near his home, and develops feelings for him secretly. Coincidentally, Ouyang Nian (played by Tian Peng), a member of the Dongchang, came to inquire. He had a physical altercation with a nearby fortune teller (played by Bai Ying) and was met by Gu Sheng and his mother. They then brought the injured fortune teller to Yang Zhiyun's place, where they learned their true identities - Yang Huizhen, the daughter of Yang Lian, the left deputy censor who was executed with a cane for accusing eunuch Wei Zhongxian; General Shimen Qiao who defended Zhongliang. Due to both of them being wanted by the court and pursued by the Eastern Factory, Gu Sheng devised numerous strategies in the garrison and received the help of the eminent monk Huiyuan (played by Qiao Hong) in order to escape from the pursuit of the Eastern Factory and make a living. The movie is adapted from Pu Songling's "Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio" story about a female warrior.
