Plot Summary

In 1953, in New York, insecticidal Bill (played by Peter Weller) engages in solitary personal writing, with only two friends aware of his literary endeavors. Bill's wife Joan (played by Judy Davis) is addicted to injecting insecticide powder. Bill visits drug rehabilitation doctor Banwei for her, but is soon summoned by the Narcotics Control Bureau. There, he encounters a talking bug that reveals Bill's true identity as a spy. In panic, Bill escapes home and accidentally shoots his wife, forcing him to follow the guidance of a strange creature and seek refuge in the "zone" in the Middle East. The local black meat plantation owner, American writer, and his wife who resembles Joan, as well as the gay businessman and women at the market, all seem to be part of a conspiracy. With the help of his talking typewriter "Clark Nova," Bill creates his own work and keeps getting closer to the truth of the conspiracy. After losing Joan again, Bill discovers the connection between the interval and Dr. Wei. This film won multiple accolades, including the 1993 London Film Festival Actress of the Year Award and the 1992 Canadian Genie Awards for Best Director and Best Cinematography.
