Description
Plot Summary
Adapted from the novel of the same name by Yu Hua. Fu Gui (Ge You), a wealthy young man, was addicted to gambling. After his wife Jia Zhen (Gong Li) tried to persuade him repeatedly but failed, she left him with her daughter Feng Xia. That night, Fu Gui lost all his family property and angered his father. He was forced to sell his mother's jewelry and rent a dilapidated house to make a living. One year later, Jia Zhen held Feng Xia in her arms and brought her newborn son You Qing back home. Fu Gui changed his ways and began to live a peaceful life by acting in shadow puppetry. But the good times didn't last long. During the Civil War, Fu Gui was taken by the Kuomintang to work as a laborer. After many twists and turns, he finally returned to his hometown to reunite with his family. Feng Xia became mute due to illness. In the later Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution, although he gained some small blessings, adversity always followed him like a shadow
