Plot Summary
This film is based on real events and has been nominated for the American Youth Audience Choice Award. In the 1930s in Texas, black people were deprived of their right to vote and subjected to segregation and discrimination in employment, justice, military service, marriage, and other areas. Mel Tolson (Denzel Washington) hopes his fellow countrymen can do something. He established the first debate team for black universities at school. After careful selection, four students stood out: Hamilton (played by Jermaine Williams), Henry (played by Nate Parker), Samantha (played by Jurine Smollett), and James (played by Denzel Whitaker). On the path of growing up in the debate team, Mel constantly challenged the traditional concepts of society at that time. His rebellious spirit and intense teaching methods were constantly criticized by people, but he persisted in his beliefs and eventually entered the debate hall of Harvard University with the debate team members
