The Hawaiian Islands are a crescent shaped island chain consisting of 124 small islands and 8 large islands, intricately embedded in the central waters of the Pacific Ocean, earning them the titles of "Pacific crossroads" and "gateway to the Asia Pacific region for the United States". Oahu is the third largest island and also the political and cultural center of Hawaii, where the capital Honolulu is located. 80% of the 1.1 million people in the state reside on this island. Hawaii's famous places include Honolulu, Wilkie Beach, and Pearl Harbor.
