Plot Summary

The legend of Merlin: Merlin, as an advisor, magician, and prophet to King Arthur, is probably the most famous magician in history. He has appeared in many of our beloved British legends. He can use his magic to win wars and turn himself into a hunting dog or a stag. (Hehe~I guess the professor's fans are going to be depressed. Why did he become Xiao Tian and James?) He can foresee the future and even control the fate of people. Although Merlin and his life are both legendary stories, there is really such a person in history, and he is the Welsh poet Medlyn who lived in the 6th century AD. This poet went insane during the war and fled to the forests of Scotland, where he predicted the future. Later, Geoffrey, a historian from Monmouth County, England, changed Medlyn's name to Merlin and referred to him as a character from the English folktale "The History of the English Kings". This book, written in 1136, introduces the origins of England. (Sweating~I'd rather believe he's a wizard, not a mentally abnormal person | | |) For hundreds of years, Merlin's story has been constantly amplified and rewritten by other writers. The most famous one is Thomas Mallory, the author of the 15th century book "The Death of King Arthur". His novel about the king and his Knights of the Round Table is very popular. Like many mythological characters, Merlin also had outstanding parents. Jeffrey said his mother was the daughter of a king and knew magic, while his father was either a devil or some kind of evil ghost called 'Nightmare'. Another theory is that Merlin was born to Mother Earth and the devil Incubus in a nightmare, and Satan planned to make Merlin a force of evil on Earth to fight against the power of goodness of Jesus Christ. However, after Merlin was born, he immediately underwent baptism and began his beautiful life, but still retained his ability to foresee and cast spells. (This version is more legendary, but has obvious traces of being altered by Christianity~) Merlin inherited his mother's kindness and his father's magical power. When he was still a child, he showed his unique talent and even saved his own life while doing so. The story begins in the 15th century with King Wotigan of England, who wanted to build a tower but failed. No matter how hard his soldiers work during the day, the tower will turn into ruins overnight at night. So, King Wotigan sought a solution from his magician, but the magician said to add a child's blood to the lime used to build the tower, but the child's father must not be human. In search of such a child, the king's envoy quickly discovered Merlin and brought it to the king. Although Merlin was only 7 years old at the time, he accurately explained why the tower collapsed every day because it was built on a piece of groundwater. He also predicted that if the groundwater was drained, two sleeping dragons would be seen in two hollow boulders. The king was so lucky that these two "cute" pets did not become angry due to illegal construction. Later, it was proven that Merlin was not wrong, so the king released Merlin. Not only that, Merlin also gave Wotigan a more interesting prophecy as a friendly gift. The red dragon represents Wales, and the other white dragon represents Saxons. Two dragons fought against each other, and Merlin predicted that the red dragon would eventually defeat the white dragon. When this day came, it would also be the day when the Welsh defeated the Saxons. In 1485, the Welsh royal family Henry VII inherited the throne and was believed to have fulfilled Merlin's prophecy. After the death of King Wotigan, Merlin became an advisor to the later three generations of kings. These three kings are Aurelius, King Uther, and the most famous, King Arthur, son of King Uther. People believe that during the reign of Orilius, Merlin moved England's national treasure, the prehistoric Stonehenge, from Ireland to England through magic. At that time, King Aurelius hoped to build a large monument, so Merlin chose a place in Ireland where stones were produced. This place is called the "Dance of Giants" in Ireland because people believe that giant stones have special effects. But more than 15000 fully armed British soldiers with ladders and ropes were unable to move the boulder even a step. Merlin effortlessly moved the stone from Ireland to England. Until today, this giant stone still stands here (in fact, the giant stone had been standing here around 2100 BC, thousands of years earlier than Merlin's story. However, some of the blue stones in the area were indeed transported from Wales, so the claim that the stone heads were transported here by waterway is not entirely unreasonable). In the era of King Uther, Merlin played an indispensable role. At that time, King Uther fell in love with a Duchess named Ignace, so her husband, the Duke of Cornwall Grolis, locked her up in a heavily guarded castle. But Merlin used magic to make King Uther look exactly like the Duke of Gloris, and helped him get the key to the castle. Neither the soldier nor Igna noticed any flaws. That night, Igna became pregnant, and the child in her womb was King Arthur, who later inherited the throne of King Uther and became the king of Great Britain. King Uther was truly a lecherous man, daring to sneak into Igna's residence like this. If Grandpa Merlin was just joking, the consequences would be very serious~Later, the Duke died in a war, and Igna married King Uther. Merlin's grandfather's green hat factory officially opened, and he later arranged many strange marriages. The old man has a wide range of hobbies. It seems that Deng School also has this hobby. Merlin protected the childhood of King Arthur until he inherited the throne, and later became a prophet, magician, and military advisor to King Arthur, ensuring the success of this great king. When King Arthur was 15 years old, Merlin helped him obtain the Divine Sword. Later, during the war, Merlin warned King Arthur that he could only pull his sword out of its scabbard at the last moment. It was difficult to do so because Arthur's opponent was about to win, but King Arthur followed Merlin's advice and only pulled his sword out of its scabbard at the last moment. When he pulled out the sword, the light emitted by the divine sword deeply stung his opponents, leaving them at a loss. As a result, King Arthur ultimately achieved victory. In another battle, Merlin also helped King Arthur by casting magic on his enemies, causing them to fall asleep. Afterwards, Merlin, in order to consolidate the power of the Arthurian dynasty, facilitated a political marriage between King Arthur and Quinifin, the daughter of King Leodgran of Camelliad. This also laid the foundation for the downfall of the Arthur dynasty. (This is a sequel, to be discussed later. Anyway, this is not bad for Merlin himself. King Arthur also inherited his father's stubbornness, and Merlin was helpless~) People believe that Merlin has the ability to transform himself into a child, an old man, a woman, a dwarf, or an animal. He can control the roaring sea and build walls for King Arthur's castle, throwing down soldiers who try to climb the walls and attack King Arthur. Despite his outstanding abilities, this great wizard still made a foolish mistake. He fell in love with a female wizard named Avini (sometimes also known as the 'Woman of the Lake') and told her the secret of her magical powers. Avini, who understood Merlin's weaknesses, cast a spell on him and imprisoned him forever in an oak tree. There are also legends claiming that this female wizard was a disciple of Merlin, but it is unknown why the master and disciple turned against each other. In short, teacher-student relationships are really dangerous. However, there are other legends. It is rumored that although he was imprisoned underground, he chose to do so voluntarily. Along with him were thirteen treasures on the throne, and he became the guardian of both the throne and the treasures. It is said that he was waiting for the day when King Arthur returned, and he would return to the human world to continue assisting King Arthur. Returning with bank deposits and former members of the opposition party, the beautiful dream of the English people | | | In short, Merlin remains a spiritual symbol of the Welsh people to this day. It is not so much Arthur who created such a legend as Merlin's achievements. The Legend of Merlin - The Establishment of the Arthurian Dynasty. The life story of Merlin is almost ubiquitous in various European magic stories, but the most concentrated event records are based on various miracles that assist King Arthur. The historical background of the story of King Arthur is around the 6th century, when tribal leaders lived after the collapse of Rome and resisted the Anglo Saxon invasion of the British Isles, becoming one of the ideal knight images in people's minds. But I cannot imagine that in that era of cultural poverty, where even words were lacking, there were some people who could demonstrate the moral standards that were considered ideal for the next thousand years. In fact, something with the nature of a folk legend will continue to be added and modified with new elements in the long river of history and gain public recognition, gradually appearing in a new form in front of future generations. The story of King Arthur is a vivid example. The earliest legend of King Arthur was certainly passed down orally, and later on, we saw in the late 8th century Welsh historian Nannius' "The History of the Britons" that the deeds of this leader were mentioned. Regardless of the author's academic background and rigor, at least this is the oldest written reference to this legendary figure. Subsequently, with the Norman conquest story spreading more widely, in 1137, the Welsh bishop Geoffrey wrote the "Annals of the Kings of Britain" in Latin, which extensively introduced the deeds of this legendary figure. Subsequently, more writers and theologians intervened in the process of dissemination, and new language versions emerged in Norman French and English. People from England, France, the Holy Roman Empire, Italy, and Spain began to understand and recognize the legend of this hero one after another. In the 11th and 12th centuries, the story of Arthur was continuously promoted, and it was not until the 14th century that a more universal work appeared - "The Death of King Arthur". In different versions, we can find various subtle differences, such as in earlier works that only focused on depicting the chivalrous spirit of Arthur himself and the Knights of the Round Table, the death of King Arthur emphasizes the bumpy journey of finding the Holy Grail. The search for the Holy Grail is a romantic experience, but it is also imbued with a strong religious color, because in the Christian world, the Holy Grail is not just an ordinary mythical thing, but can also be a religious symbol - the generosity and salvation of Jesus. Just like the subjective purpose of people participating in that grand holy war, self salvation and God's forgiveness were the main themes of medieval religious spirit. Similarly, we can see that the number of Knights of the Round Table has also changed. In the earlier version, they had a total of 150 people, but after various revisions, they have quietly become the more familiar 12 person version, because 12 is an extremely important and sacred number in Christianity, and the most straightforward example is the 12 disciples. Therefore, from these brief analyses above, we can already see that the King Arthur of our 'familiar' era is actually so vague and has been heavily altered by people. The "ideal" story of King Arthur in the minds of many people is just a 14th century version. (This is not an introduction to the Da Vinci Code, so I don't want to discuss the question of whether Maria Magdalene or the Holy Grail is alone. I just want to introduce the historical background.) Merlin's story takes place in this magical and beautiful historical era, and whether he truly exists or not, Merlin is already the most vivid and lively magical character. Arthur's father, Uther The war between King Panzigan and the Duke of Cornwall, Grolis, was similar to the ancient feudal warlord chaos. In the end, King Uther won because of an outstanding strategist like Merlin, so he also inherited the Duke's property Wife | | |. This was not uncommon in that era, and it was also a gentle way to consolidate power. And it was Merlin (who today truly belongs to the "pigeon faction") who matched King Uther and Duchess Igna. The first son born to King Uther and Igna was none other than the renowned King Arthur. Unfortunately, although King Uther built a kingdom for his son, he did not give him a stable regime and passed away early. Merlin had already known that King Uther's life was not long due to his magical prefabrication ability. (The king's life was quite wild and unrestrained, and a certain wave felt that he couldn't live beyond his prime without looking at him...) So Merlin made a bold decision to hand over the infant crown prince to Lord Hector, a loyal minister of King Uther, to take care of him, enabling the prince to overcome the crisis of palace life. King Arthur grew up smoothly in a calm and safe environment, shattering the dreams of the restless courtiers who held the emperor hostage to the lords. (Without an emperor, who else can we hold? | |) As the political power gradually stabilized, the various lords restrained each other and there was no best time to elect a new king. Merlin and the Archbishop of Canterbury jointly planned the famous Sword in the Stone incident. On Christmas, gather nobles and famous knights from all over the country to compete and elect the king. On Christmas morning, in the center of the square, there appeared a giant rock with a sword inserted, engraved in gold letters: whoever can pull out this sword from the anvil is born as the true king of England. King Arthur returned smoothly in Merlin's plan this time. Truly inherited the English throne.
