Plot Summary

In early 20th century Japan, a small mountain village located in the upper reaches of the Mogami River in Yamagata Prefecture was covered by thick snow. The Gu Village family sat in groups, living in poverty. 7-year-old girl Ashin (played by Makoto Hamada) did not receive any good news about being able to enter the classroom, but was instead ordered by her father Sako (played by Goro Inagaki) to work as a maid at a lumber shop. In order to avoid causing difficulties for his mother (played by Uesugi Ayaka) and grandmother (played by Shimoko Yoshimura), Ashin had to endure the pain of separation from his family. The life in the lumber shop is very difficult. Ashin cannot eat enough, sleep well, and is even falsely accused of stealing money. She escapes from here in anger and ends up being rescued by the hunter Junzuo (played by Makinosuke Manjima) who escaped military service in the cold and windy mountains. In the cold winter, Axin felt the long-awaited warmth. However, the good times didn't last long, and she will eventually separate from Junzuo brother. Even if she briefly returns home, there are still more hardships and tests waiting for this stubborn little girl on the road ahead... This film is the movie version of the classic Japanese morning drama "Ashin".
