Plot Summary

This film is adapted from a real event and tells the story of a team of oil workers who, facing the most serious man-made disaster in history, fight against the disaster with unparalleled courage and firm will, and strive to save themselves. 40 miles offshore, the world's top offshore drilling platform, Deepwater Horizon, stands on the vast waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Mike Williams, the deputy manager of the platform (played by Mark Wahlberg), is leading his team to complete a record breaking drilling operation. Unexpectedly, the sudden unstable well pressure and pressure surge caused the emergency safety system to malfunction, leading to a series of explosions. Deep sea crude oil broke through the well cover and gushed out, forming oil columns dozens of meters high, and a massive fire followed. Millions of tons of crude oil poured out, and the entire drilling platform and nearby sea level were surrounded by thick smoke and raging fires, turning into a human purgatory where 126 drilling workers were trapped. Due to the intense fire, the maritime rescue team was unable to approach. Mike led several brave companions in a self rescue operation. They searched and rescued the injured, arranged for evacuation, and held on until the last moment. The drilling platform is about to sink, and Mike and his companions must escape from dire straits.
