Plot Summary

One day, the father of Danish Prince Hamlet (played by Laurence Olivier) died mysteriously in the garden. The king's brother Claudius ascended to the throne and married Hamlet's mother, the former queen. The sudden death of his father, coupled with his mother's remarriage, left Hamlet feeling depressed all day long. One day, Hamlet's friend Horatio told him that at midnight, a sorrowful, angry, and depressed ghost would appear on the castle platform. Hamlet arrived at the high platform in the middle of the night and met his father's ghost. He learned from the ghost that his father had been killed by the current king Claudius. The ghost demanded Hamlet to seek revenge against the murderer who usurped the throne and occupied the queen. Carrying the task of revenge, Hamlet decided to disguise himself by pretending to be crazy, in order to spy on Claudius' every move. However, indecisive, he hesitated to kill his uncle. Just as he was hesitating, a theater troupe arrived at the palace. He arranged a play to portray the scene of the king being killed in a theatrical form.
