Plot Summary

Michael O'Hara (Orson Welles), a sailor who had killed people in Spain, returned to New York. One night, he saved the robbed beauty Elsa (Rita Hayworth) on the way. Elsa then asked her husband, lawyer Arthur Bannister (Everett Sloane), to find Michael and let him become a sailor on the ship. The Bannister family has just returned from Shanghai to New York and is about to take a boat to San Francisco. While sailing at sea, Michael and Elsa developed feelings for each other. And Michael also met Arthur's friend George Grisby (Glenn Anders). After learning that Michael had killed someone before, George wanted Michael to kill another person and promised him a commission of $5000. The person he wanted Michael to kill was George himself. Originally, George wanted to create the illusion that he was already dead and escape from his current life and his wife's side. Their plan seemed seamless, but George accidentally killed Arthur's butler, and then George was really killed.
