Plot Summary

In 1901, the international situation was turbulent and the Russo Japanese War was about to break out. In order to cope with the harsh environment of combat in the frigid zone, the senior management of the Japanese Army decided to conduct a drill and set the location of the exercise at the towering, steep, and extremely cold Mount Hakuta. The exercise team was divided into two groups, led by Captain Tokushima (played by Ken Takakura) of the 31st Company of Hirosaki and Captain Kanda (played by Shinya Kitaro) of the 5th Company of Aomori. Tokushima has rich experience in marching on snowy plains. He and Kanda carefully studied the marching route and made an appointment to meet at the destination. However, Kanda's superior, Lieutenant Yamada (played by Kentaro Mikakuni), was solely focused on defeating his allies. He not only expanded the marching force without authorization, but also rudely disrupted the established plan. His clumsiness led the 5th Company towards the path of death...
