Plot Summary
Di Yun, a farmer from Xiangxi, has been practicing martial arts and farming with his master Tie Suo Heng Jiang Qi Changfa and junior sister Qi Fang since childhood. One day, Qi Changfa's senior brother Wan Zhenshan, whom he hadn't seen for many years, sent a disciple to invite him as a guest. Three people arrived at Wanjia. At first, when the thief Lv Tong came to seek revenge, Di Yun fought to get injured and repel Lv Tong, but instead saw suspicion in Wan Jia. First, eight disciples of Wan Zhenshan provoked him late at night and beat him up. The next day, he couldn't resist their ridicule and taunts, and retaliated with a few sword techniques he learned from an old beggar. Wan Zhenshan suspected that Qi Changfa had learned the secret of Liancheng Swordsmanship that was not passed down in his master's school and had taught it to Di Yun. He lured Qi Changfa into the room and killed him, but then fabricated the scene and falsely accused Qi Changfa of injuring him and fled. However, he was still unsatisfied. He then set a trap and falsely accused Di Yun, who bravely went to catch the thief, of raping and stealing, and sent him to death row. Wan Gui, the son of Wan Zhenshan, pretended to be a good person and made Qi Fang think that he had invested money and effort to get Di Yun out of prison as soon as possible, but in fact, he bribed the government to punish Di Yun lightly. Qi Fang believed it to be true and believed that Di Yun was indeed guilty. Although her feelings were still there, she felt sad and disappointed in Di Yun and finally married Wan Gui. Di Yun was filled with grief, anger, and sadness, and gave up on himself in prison. A crazy prisoner in the same room thought he was a spy and started punching and kicking him. But after staying for three years and feeling hopeless, when he hanged himself, the madman saved him and told him his name was Ding Dian. He had obtained a Liancheng Sword Technique from the masters of Qi Changfa and Wan Zhenshan, and was pursued by many martial arts figures. He went into exile and met Ling Shuanghua, the daughter of a magistrate named Ling Tuisi. They fell in love at first sight. The governor, however, threatened his daughter to force him to hand over the Liancheng Technique, and soon after, he was imprisoned. In recent years, he has developed the top-notch internal skill Shenzhao Gong. Di Yun heard for the first time that his master was a cunning and cunning person with a deep sense of authority. He heard that he and his two uncles had teamed up to kill the master ancestor, but he was only skeptical. Ding Dian wants to pass on his divine illumination skill. At first, he was unwilling to learn, but later he thought of revenge and started learning. Two years later, he and Ding Dian were as close as brothers, but he felt that the people outside were treacherous, and staying in prison was actually safer. Dante's heart was tied to Ling Shuanghua, so they both escaped from prison one night. When they visited Ling Zhifu's house at night, they were surprised to find that Ling Shuanghua had already died. Ling Zhifu had even smeared his daughter's coffin with the elixir of the Golden Wave Ten Flower Poison. Under the great grief, Ding Dian soothed the coffin and wept bitterly, deeply poisoned. Di Yun helped Ding Dian repel the people of Ling Zhifu and fled to a deserted garden. Several disciples of Wan Zhenshan followed and came to Ding Dian and Di Yun to fight to the death to annihilate the enemy. Ding Dian instructed him to bury him and Ling Shuanghua together in the future and then die. In a panic, Di Yun fled to Qi Fang's house and saw her daughter with the same nickname as him, "Empty Heart Vegetable". She was in excruciating pain, unconscious, and passed out at the same time as Wan Gui during the fight. Waking up on a small boat by the Yangtze River, it drifted down. Not long after, in a dilapidated temple near the river, I met a ferocious monk Baoxiang under the Xizang Blood Knife Gate. Baoxiang was hungry and wanted to eat him, but he accidentally poisoned him with two poisonous mice. He put on the monk's robe of a precious elephant because his clothes were torn, but was mistakenly identified as a small licentious monk of the Bloodblade Sect in a fight among fish traders along the Yangtze River. After he helped the two heroes of the Southern Four Wonders Sect in the Central Plains martial arts world, Ling and Jian, he became enemies and was about to be captured when the head of the Blood Knife Sect, Blood Knife Patriarch, rushed to save him and kidnapped Shui Sheng, the daughter of Shui Dai. Blood Knife Ancestor also mistook him for his own disciple and fled with him and Shui Sheng. Shui Sheng's father, Shui Dai, along with Lu, Liu, and Hua Sanqi, led many skilled men to chase after him all the way. Both sides arrived at a snowy mountain on the Sichuan Tibet border, where they encountered an avalanche and were trapped in the mountains. After a fierce battle, Blood Knife Ancestor killed Lu, Liu, and Shui. However, Hua Tiegan, who ranked second among the Four Wonders, knelt down in danger and surrendered to Blood Knife Ancestor. When Blood Knife Ancestor discovered that Di Yun was not a disciple grandson and was secretly assisting the enemy, and wanted to kill him, Di Yun's throat was choked, and under his breath, the Divine Illumination Skill came naturally and he killed Blood Knife Ancestor. Afterwards, Hua Tiegan revealed his ferocity, wanting to kill Di Yun and Shui Sheng to silence them, and also eat the bodies of several sworn brothers. Di Yun risked her life to protect Shui Sheng and her father's body, and fought eagles to satisfy Shui Sheng's hunger, finally eliminating his misunderstanding. After the snow melted in the spring of the second year, many Central Plains experts who were trapped outside the mountain came back. Hua Tiegan was afraid that Shui Sheng would reveal the truth, so he falsely accused Shui Sheng of colluding with Di Yun, causing Shui Sheng's old lover Wang Xiaofeng to turn against him. Di Yun, disregarding his own safety, stepped forward to defend Shui Sheng's innocence, which only made people believe him more. At the pleading of Shui Sheng, Di Yun had to leave alone. He rushed back to his hometown to search for his master, but coincidentally encountered Second Master Uncle Yan Daping and Master Uncle Wan Zhenshan who were digging treasures there. They were fighting over the Liancheng Sword Manual, causing Wan Gui to be poisoned and Yan Daping to be injured. Di Yun rescued Yan Daping and asked for the truth about his master's sect. Only then did he realize that his master was indeed a bad person, and the second master who had shown him kindness by pretending to be an old beggar was probably not a good person. He rushed to Wanjia in Jiangling, intending to kill Wan Shi and his son for revenge, but couldn't resist Qi Fang's plea and instead saved Wan Gui against his will. Unexpectedly, Wan Gui and his son discovered that Qi Fang was suspicious and instead wanted to kill Qi Fang, who was trying to save them with the antidote. Di Yun rushed to save Qi Fang. After leaving, Qi Fang used the excuse of going back to save Wan Shi and his son, and finally was killed by Wan Shi's father Yu. Di Yun engraved the secret of the Liancheng Sword Manual on the walls of Jiangling City, hoping to provoke revenge from the Wan family. However, he witnessed a fire between Wan Zhenshan, Yan Daping, and Qi Changfa, who narrowly escaped death. He saved his master in a critical moment, but his master actually wanted to kill him. When Governor Ling, Hua Tiegan, Wang Xiaofeng, and others rushed in to seize the treasure and went crazy one by one, he finally saw through the world and people's hearts. After burying Ding Dian and Ling Shuanghua together, he rode alone back to the big snow mountain by the river, intending to live in seclusion for the rest of his life in this unpredictable and dangerous place. To his surprise, Shui Sheng was waiting there and said he knew he would definitely come. This book is an early work by Jin Yong, written in memory of an elderly worker who was wrongly accused and had a lifelong misfortune in his family when he was a child. The language is simple and vivid, the plot is compact, and the story is touching. The whole book is filled with a sense of sadness and anger, which makes readers feel like they are hooked. Although not as culturally rich as some of the author's other epic works, writing about the world, people's hearts, emotions, and loved ones is far beyond the scope of ordinary martial arts novels, and cannot even be summarized by the word "temperament". It can be said to be a unique work in Jin Yong's works.
