Plot Summary

In 1942, the War of Resistance Against Japan and the Second World War were in a white hot stage. The raging fire ignites the prairie fire, causing great suffering to all living beings, natural and man-made disasters, and widespread grief. When military strategists and politicians focused their attention on the plundering of one city, one country, almost no one noticed that a devastating drought was breaking out in the ancient central Henan province. The protagonist of the film, his former employer (played by Zhang Guoli), is cunning, vulgar, and a typical feudal landlord. However, even so, he is unable to resist this unprecedented disaster. He is forced to flee and witnesses the various deaths of his son, daughter-in-law, spouse, and other relatives firsthand. His experience is a microcosm of the suffering of three million disaster victims. Faced with the hardships of this group of people, whether it is the lofty Chairman Jiang (played by Chen Daoming), or the American journalist Bai Xiude (played by Adrien Brody) who deeply reports the truth of the disaster to the people, as well as everyone at home and abroad, how can they glimpse the scene of human purgatory in front of them.
