Plot Summary

The rule of the Tokugawa shogunate ended, and the Meiji government was firmly established. The notorious "executioner" Kamata Jubei (played by Ken Watanabe), as a remnant of the shogunate, lived a life of anonymity in the desolate and cold Hokkaido. He made a promise to his deceased wife to seal the murder knife and support himself and his two children through labor, but the cruel living environment still left him feeling powerless. On this day, the former comrade of the Ten Soldiers Guard, Masago Machiba (played by Akira Hashimoto), came to visit. In a nearby small town, the beautiful prostitute Natsume (played by Kunashiri) was disfigured by a rough woman, but the police chief Kazuzo Ohishi (played by Hiroshi Sato) protected and tolerated her. Xia Mu's companions pooled their money to search for bounty killers, but those who dared to invade were brutally destroyed by Da Shi. In order to improve the lives of the children, Jubei and Machang set out on the road and met a young Ainu (played by Yanagisawa) with the same goal on the way. The three of them walk together, waiting for an unknown fate... This film is a remake of Clint Eastwood's eponymous work.
