Description

Plot Summary

Critic Alexander (played by Erland Josephson) celebrates his 50th birthday at his home in Sweden, where his young son has just undergone throat surgery and cannot speak. The two of them planted a sapling in silence, hoping it would grow green branches and leaves. However, that evening, the radio broadcasted a news of launching a nuclear missile, indicating that World War III was about to break out. Desperate Alexander prayed to God not to wage war, and even offered to sacrifice everything to prevent the end of the world. Alexander, who was looking forward to the rebirth of the world, burned down his own house in a state of exhaustion. In the raging fire, Alexander was taken to the hospital by ambulance. The youngest son came to the shore to continue watering the saplings they had planted together, and everything seemed to have returned to calm. The final masterpiece directed by the famous Soviet film master Andrei Tarkovsky, "Sacrifice," won four awards including the Catholic Humanitarian Spirit Award at the 1986 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for the Palme d'Or for Best Picture. In 1988, it won the Best Foreign Language Film award at the 41st British Academy Film and Television Arts Awards.
