Plot Summary

Broadway veteran actress Margot Johnny (Bette Davis), despite her age, still exudes charm and is a sought after hall of fame on Broadway. A successful career in entertainment, a glamorous social circle, everything looks so perfect. It wasn't until her playwright friend Lloyd Richards (played by Hugh Marlowe) and wife Karen (played by Celeste Holm) introduced her to the handsome, intelligent, and charming Eva Harrington (played by Anne Baxter) as a follower, that Margot realized the threat posed by this girl who was devoted to her studies and making rapid progress, and couldn't help but become wary. At the same time, Ava tried her best to please the famous drama critic Ederson DeWitt (played by George Sanders) and was determined to find her place on Broadway. This film won 6 awards including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor of the 23rd Academy Awards in 1951, and 14 Oscar nominations. The film still holds the record for the highest number of Oscar nominations to this day. The story of the film was adapted into the Broadway musical "Applause" in 1970 and also made into the TV movie "Applause" in 1973.
