Description

Plot Summary

In the late 1970s, Xu Lingjun (Zhu Shimao), a primary school teacher who had been a horse herder for half of his life at the Chilechuan Ranch in Northwest China, traveled all the way to the Beijing Hotel to meet his father, Xu Jingyou (Liu Qiong), an overseas Chinese entrepreneur who had not met him for 30 years. At that time, Xu Jingyu, who pursued personal freedom, could not bear the wrong marriage with his wife and left his wife and children to go to the United States. This time, he intends to bring Xu Lingjun back to the United States to inherit the business. During the conversation, Xu Lingjun did not consider the act of integrating himself into the collective and constantly prioritizing national interests as a manifestation of outdated thinking. He did not envy his father's comfortable life. Looking back at the path he has taken over the past few decades, although he had the tragic experience of being abandoned in childhood and being labeled as a rightist and sent down to the pasture, he also felt the warmth of humanity from the simple and kind villagers in the pastoral area several times. After marrying Li Xiuzhi (Congshan), a girl from Sichuan who had suffered hardships in difficult times, Xu Lingjun tasted the bitterness and sweetness of hardship. He believes that after the country has finally overcome the big hurdle of the Cultural Revolution, individuals should follow her towards a new life with their relatives and friends, never abandoning them.
