Description
Plot Summary
The defeat in the Battle of Midway directly declared the defeat of the Japanese army on the Pacific battlefield, and the stubborn Japanese army still held onto the southernmost island of Japan - Iwo Jima. This seemingly inconspicuous island staged the deadliest war in the Pacific during World War II. Lieutenant General Kuribayashi Tadao (played by Ken Watanabe) was the commander of the Japanese army on Iwo Jima, responsible for this last line of defense. Lieutenant General Kuribayashi vigorously reformed the bad habits and shortcomings within the Japanese army, and designed a complete set of combat plans to deal with the US military, mainly focusing on procrastination. Although he and the 20000 Japanese soldiers were united, facing the 40000 American soldiers who had the air superiority, Kuribayashi knew that this would be a war with no way back. Before the final war, Kuribayashi wrote his last letter to his family
