Description

Plot Summary

After 1979, Iran launched the Islamic Revolution, which caused social unrest. The failure of the revolution further deprived Iran of hope for democracy and led to increasing conservatism, causing unbearable suffering for the people. Nine year old Marjane is precocious and sensitive. She cleverly deceived her official henchmen and became obsessed with Western punk bands and pop music, immersing herself in her own world. After the outbreak of the Iran Iraq War, life in Iran became even more difficult. Marjane grew up and her increasingly bold actions worried her parents. When she was 14 years old, she was sent to Austria by her parents to study. In Austria, Marjane, as an Iranian, had to face discrimination and feelings of inferiority from others. When she finally overcame her psychological barriers and gained everyone's recognition, the pain of love and longing for her hometown made her decide to return to her parents' side. At this time, Iran is still experiencing the baptism of war, and religious restrictions on women's lives are becoming increasingly strict. Marjane begins to doubt whether she should continue to live in this authoritarian country.
