Plot Summary

In 1937, German businessman Rabe (played by Ulrich Tukur) and his wife Dora, who had lived in Nanjing, China for many years, prepared to return to their home country. He handed over his position at Siemens China branch to his successor, but on the same day at the farewell ball, the Japanese began bombing Nanjing city, burning and looting everywhere, causing the Nanjing riots. Panicked residents fled in all directions, but Rabe resolutely opened the company's door to take in Chinese employees and other refugees. Foreign missionaries, doctors, and merchants in Nanjing discussed the establishment of a "Nanjing International Security Zone" to ensure the safety of innocent people, and Rabe was elected as the chairman. Rabe, who had originally decided to return home the next day, decided to stay and save innocent civilians.
