Description
Plot Summary
During World War II, in Poland under German occupation, plumber Podek (played by Robert Wieckiewicz) and his partner Zapec were both thieves, and the intricate sewers became their best hiding place and storage room. He did business with the Jewish ghetto that was blockaded in the city, had old acquaintance with Ukrainian officers in the German army, and enjoyed some freedom of life in troubled times. Soon after, the Germans began to massacre and search for Jews. Some Jews who did not want to be taken to concentration camps reached a deal with Podke, and were given the opportunity to hide in the sewers based on their heads. The dark and foul smelling sewers became Podke's refuge for Jews, and the Jews on the ground were quickly captured. Under the soaring prices and continued high pressure from the Germans, Zapek left him, and Podke had to rely on himself to maintain the safety of the Jews in the sewers
