Description
Plot Summary
This film is adapted from the most legendary palace love story in Danish history. This film won the Best Screenplay and Best Actor awards at the 62nd Berlin Film Festival. Doctor Joanna Frederick Stern (Mads Mikkelsen) is spotted by King Christian VII of Denmark (Mikkel Flsgaard) and invited to accompany him on a journey through Europe. As the king's personal physician, Sternes completely influenced the mentally unstable king, gained his trust, and won the favor of Queen Caroline Mathilde (played by Alicia Vikander). The queen quickly fell in love with this handsome doctor. Their relationship even became a 'national event' at one point. With the support of the queen, Sternes became the de facto regent, and his reforms also sparked resentment among the nobility. He attempted to launch a coup, but was ultimately executed on charges of "abuse of power" and "violation of the dignity of the king".
