Description

Plot Summary

During the American Civil War, the Cameron family, the southern estate owners, used to live a comfortable life. Cameron and the Stoneman children attend the same boarding school, and during their interactions, young Benjamin Cameron (played by Henry B. Walthall) and Elsie Stoneman (played by Lillian Gish) develop feelings for each other. However, soon the Civil War broke out. Benjamin joined the Southern army and rushed to the front line, becoming enemies with his former friend Stoneman (played by Ralph Lewis) from the North. After the war, black people burned, killed, and looted. Benjamin organized the Ku Klux Klan to retaliate against black people and foiled the conspiracy to establish the so-called 'Black Kingdom'. Benjamin and Elsie, this troubled couple, finally came together. Their union heralds the birth and unification of a new country. This epic film, "The Birth of a Nation," directed by American film giant D.W. Griffith and lasting over three hours, is the most important milestone film in world film history and a classic of the silent film era. This film is highly controversial due to its advocacy of white supremacy and glorification of the Ku Klux Klan.
